An Estill Springs man was killed Monday while crossing North Jackson Street in Tullahoma.

According to a report by Tullahoma Police Officer Tyler Walls, Michael N. Johnson, 48, of Cindy Hollow Road, was crossing the busy street at around 5:30 on Monday afternoon when he was struck by a 2007 Dodge operated by Trey Alan McCarty, 19, of Lynchburg Road, Fayetteville.

According to the accident report, when the officer arrived at the accident scene, near McDonald’s, he saw members of the Tullahoma Fire Department providing medical attention to Johnson.

McCarty told the officer that he was traveling along North Jackson Street when he entered the turning lane, when he hit something in the middle of the road.

When he got out of the vehicle, “he realized that he had hit a person and was unsure where the person came from,” the report states.

Witnesses told the officer they saw the Johnson run across the roadway from the area of Tullahoma High School, just before being struck by the vehicle.

Johnson was transported to Tennova Healthcare-Harton by Coffee County Ambulance Service, where he later died from his injuries.

Johnson’s brothers, Chester Bowers and Dale Johnson, told the officer they were crossing North Jackson Street from the area of the high school with Johnson, who was a few steps behind them.

They told the officer that they went inside McDonald’s and soon thereafter, someone came in “yelling a person had been hit by a vehicle.” They left the restaurant and went to the area where the accident occurred and found their brother laying in the turning lane.

No charges were filed in the accident.

Tullahoma Police Officer Josh Leverette assisted in the investigation of the accident.
