Investigators looking to find cause of Christmas Eve fire
A story that appeared in Friday’s edition of The Herald Chronicle had mentioned the state Department of Commerce and Insurance’s Bomb and Arson Section had been involved in looking into the cause of a Dec. 23 fire that gutted Jeff Hawkersmith’s 125 Parks Lane home in Winchester.
This photo shows what’s left of the Jeff Hawkersmith home at 125 Parks Lane, Winchester, after a Christmas Eve fire took its toll on the structure.
Franklin County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Chris Guess said the section was called in, but the action does not imply arson or any type of wrongdoing had occurred.
“They’re like a medical examiner who’s called in cases to determine the cause of death,” Guess said. “It doesn’t mean there’s been a crime committed.
“They’ve been there to determine the exact cause of the fire. Insurance companies want to know that.”
To set the record straight Mr. Hawkersmith said he does have insurance on the home which was incorrectly reported in the article, which said he did not.
Hawkersmith said the family is doing fine, and he extends his thanks to those who have come forward to show support. He added that donations to help the family’s cause are not necessary. ary.
