After a disappointing loss last Tuesday night to Lawrence County, Franklin County’s Rebels basketball team bounced back with wins over Lincoln County and Riverdale.
The impressive two-day run began on Thursday night when the Rebels dismantled District 8-AAA competitor Lincoln County by a final score of 76-47.
Then on Friday night, the Rebels received a monumental win over the always-tough Riverdale High School of Murfreesboro, 56-52.
Franklin County opened up Thursday night’s game against Lincoln County with some of its best all-around basketball of the season.
The game started with the Rebels going on a 13-0 run, which Included points from four different Franklin County players.
By the end of the first quarter, Franklin County led 26-12. Matt Schmitz matched Lincoln County’s offense, single-handedly, with 12 first- quarter points.
The second quarter began with a quick two from the Lincoln County Falcons, but was quickly answered by Franklin County’s Montrez Vanzant.
It was another big offensive quarter for the Rebels, outscoring the Falcons 18-12.
By halftime the Rebels already had three players in double-digits. Schmitz led with 12 points while Tyler Schaub and Vanzant each had 11 points.
Franklin County led 44-25 at the halftime break.
There was no slowing down following the break in the action. Entering the third quarter, the Rebels didn’t skip a beat, outscoring the Falcons 18-9.
Entering the final quarter, the Rebels led by a score of 62-34.
Even with most of the Rebels starters sitting out a majority of the fourth quarter, the Rebels still outscored the Falcons 14-13.
As the final buzzer sounded, the Rebels must have been pleased with the final score, 76-47.
Seniors Schmitz and Vanzant led the team with 19 points each. Schaub finished with 14 points, and junior Hunter Watson scored in double-digits as well with his 11 points.
Friday night’s game against the Riverdale Warriors helped show the Rebels that they can at the least compete in the regional bracket.
In the Rebels first game of the New Year, on Jan. 4, the Rebels lost a close one to the Warriors, 65-63.
This time the Rebels had other plans.
The game didn’t start out too promising with Riverdale holding an early 18-15 advantage after the first quarter.
Franklin County displayed an excellent defensive game in the second quarter, allowing just nine points.
Offensively, the Rebels took advantage by scoring 14 points in the same quarter and took a 29-27 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, both teams were evenly matched going basket-for-basket with one another. Each team scored 12 points.
With just a two-point lead, the Rebels needed strong play in the game’s final quarter.
When they needed it most, the Rebels pulled out some big plays, outscoring the Warriors 15-13 and sealing a four-point victory, 56-52.
Franklin County’s three seniors again led the way to the Rebels’ victory.
Schaub led the team with 16 points, including two three-point shots. Vanzant finished with 12 points, and Schmitz was just one-point behind him with 11 points.
Watson had another nice game, finishing the night with nine points.
Tonight the Rebels will look to continue their hot play, as they travel to Coffee County for some district action.
Earlier in the season the Rebels pulled out a 10-point victory over the Coffee County Raiders, 49-39.
Hoping for similar results tonight, tip-off is set to follow the girls’ ball game
