Despite failing to advance to Sectionals, the youth filled Franklin County High School Rebelettes track and field team has plenty of talent to build off of in the upcoming years.
This past Tuesday Riverdale High School hosted the girls’ portion of the AAA section two, sub-sectional track meet.
To advance to the sectionals an athlete had to place in the top four of the event she was participating in. Although no Rebelette accomplished this goal, several came very close.
The team of Ilana Cunningham, Hannah Brannon, Savannah Horton, and Tinia Palmer finished in fifth place in the Girls’ 4X200 meter relay with a time of 1:52.58. Shelbyville Central High School came in fourth. Less than one second faster than the Rebelettes time.
Palmer came just inches from advancing to sectionals, literally. Competing in the long jump, Palmer placed fifth with a jump of 14 feet and seven and a half inches. The jumper ahead of her beat her by just one and a half inch.
As a team the Rebelettes finished ninth out of 12 total teams. With most of the athletes being freshmen and sophomores, coach Lee Brannon should be ecstatic with getting to work with these young athletes for another few years.
Great programs takes time to build and with the young runners and field athletes in place, Franklin County could see a very successful track program in a few short year.
