In 1871 Andrew Smith Hallidie was inspired to design cable-propelled transit after he witnessed horses falling, and even dying, while attempting to pull cars up San Fransisco’s steep Jackson Street.

Before the Great Earthquake of 1906, there were more than 600 cable cars in San Francisco. By 1912, there were less than 100.
