Animal Harbor

The staff of Franklin County’s Animal Harbor has many successful adoption stories to tell and one of their favorites involves a trucker and his loyal sidekick.

Bruno, a yellow lab mix dog, was found as a stray by a loving animal supporter. He was taken to Animal Harbor, a limited-admission animal shelter facility serving Franklin County, operated by members of the Franklin County Humane Society.

Upon arrival, Bruno was immediately scanned to check for a possible microchip.

“Lucky for us, he had an Animal Harbor-issued microchip and had been adopted many, many years ago, so we were able to track down his original owner,” said Animal Harbor Executive Director Emily Holland.

Unfortunately, after waiting for his original family to rescue him, the staff accepted that they had decided not to come back for Bruno.

He was then put up for adoption again in hopes of finding a more suitable match.

Bruno was described by shelter staff as “a 9-year-old love bug with a heart for adventure and a deep love of naps.” So, of course when a trucker put in his application to adopt Bruno, the staff agreed he would make for a good trucking dog and co-pilot on and off the road.

“Fast forward to today and he is living his best life, on the road trucking with his new family!” Holland said. “Our meet-your-match adoption process and two-week foster allows us to help find the perfect fit, so everyone has a happy ever after.”

A perfect matchup also lessens the possibility of having animals returned to the shelter. The bond with Bruno’s trucker dad was apparent from the beginning and it continues to grow.

“Bruno absolutely fell in love with his new dad at first sight,” Holland said. “This was a win-win for all! We couldn’t be happier for this sweet, happily-ever-after story. Thank you to the Bissell Pet Foundation’s Cathy Bissell for supporting this senior adoption during the ‘Empty the Shelters Emergency Senior Dog and Adult Cat Adoption Event!’ Dreams really do come true.”

Wine, Whiskers & Fancy Treats

To help Animal Harbor continue its mission to save lives, promote animal welfare and support the community, everyone is invited to participate in a fundraising event, Wine, Whiskers and Fancy Treats.

The event will be held Oct. 9 at 5:30 p.m. and will feature wine, heavy hors d’oeuvres and music on the beautiful, outdoor patio at LaBella Pearl’s in Sewanee. This event would make a great date night for mom and dad, grandma and grandpa or even a blind date for animal lovers.

Proceeds will benefit Animal Harbor, a private nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Tickets are $62.40, available at animalharbor.org or by calling 931-962-4472.
