A 39-year-old Belvidere man remains in jail on a $50,000 bond following his arrest for an assault incident at 10 a.m. today when park rangers who questioned him were allegedly threatened, according to a Franklin County Sheriff's Office press release.
Sheriff's Office reports have identified the suspect as Lonnie Fred Owens, 8721 Davey Crockett Hwy., Belvidere.
Owens is charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct, reports said. He is to appear in Franklin County General Sessions Court at 8 a.m. on Aug. 2, reports said.
Reports said Sheriff’s Office personnel responded at about 10 a.m. to Mansford Road, at an area near Mansford Bridge, in reference to a barricaded suspect in a vehicle.
Upon arrival, Special Operations Unit team members attempted to contact the suspect who was inside a pickup truck, reports said.
After negotiation attempts failed, unit members were able to gain access to the vehicle with assistance from Franklin County Emergency Management Agency personnel who used an aerial drone to assess the scene, reports said.
The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Franklin County Jail where he was charged, reports said.
