caution urged

Winchester Fire Department personnel tend to a wreck site on Jan. 30 at the Highway 64/16 crossing. The accident marked the second time in less than a week that a major collision occurred at the site. Winchester Police Chief Ritchie Lewis said about six wrecks occur annually at the crossing, and motorists on Highway 16 should take extra precaution and look carefully both ways before moving forward into dangerous crossing traffic on Highway 64. Although visibility is good in both directions for drivers on Highway 64, the higher speeds on the road result in more severe collisions, Lewis said, adding that proceeding more carefully through the crossing could make the difference between a safe experience and a disaster.
