A 47-year-old Hillsboro man died while in the custody of Cowan police officers as he was being transported to the Franklin County Jail on Thursday afternoon, according to a Sheriff's Office press release.
The man has been identified as Gary Scott, 2021 Henry Cove Road, Hillsboro, reports said.
Reports said that Cowan police responded to a disturbance compliant on Chestnut Street in Cowan at about 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Upon arrival, officers made contact with the man, later identified as Scott, reports said.
Reports said that Scott appeared to be incoherent and confused, and officers took him into custody and placed him in the back of their patrol vehicle.
Ambulance personnel arrived at the scene, and attempts were made to provide medical treatment, reports said.
However, Scott allegedly became combative and refused treatment from paramedics, according to reports.
Police personnel then transported him to the Franklin County Jail, reports said, adding that upon arrival at the jail, law enforcement personnel observed that Scott, while in the back of the patrol vehicle, was unresponsive.
Sheriff’s Office personnel administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation until ambulance personnel arrived, reports said.
Scott was then transported to Southern Tennessee Regional Health System in Winchester where he was pronounced dead about 4:30 p.m, reports said.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.
