Retha McCleskey


 MCCLESKEY, Retha L. Hershman (Shirley), age 81, of Winchester Tennessee, departed this life on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022, following a brief illness.  She was born on Aug. 12, 1940, in Estill Springs, Tennessee, to the late Myrtt W. Hershman and Clara Mae Hershman. She married William L. Shirley on Oct. 15, 1959, who predeceased her on Nov. 11, 1988.  She then married David B. McCleskey on Sept. 11, 1992, who also predeceased her on July 22, 2011.  Retha was an active member of the Winchester First Baptist Church, being involved in her Sunday school class and the Amazing Grays Group.  Many folks will remember her as "The Tupperware Lady," having sold at first as a dealer and then as a manager for over 25 years.  Retha was known as a "great cook." Many have enjoyed her cooking and baked goods over the years.  She and Bill opened and ran Hilltop Daycare for several years. Retha has been a member of the Family and Community Education (FCE) Clubs (formerly Home Demonstration Clubs) for 62 years, having joined in 1960.  She has been president of the East Winchester FCE Club for 15+ years.  While married to David McCleskey, she became involved in the Highland Rim Garden Club for several years and was an active volunteer at Southern Tennessee Regional Health System-Winchester for over 20 years.  In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a brother, Myrtt W. Hershman, Jr. and a sister, Doris Hershman Brown.  She leaves to cherish many memories her children, Bryan Shirley of Montgomery, Alabama, Melanie Shirley (Daniel) Ashworth of Winchester, Tennessee, Stephanie Shirley of Nashville, Tennessee; her sister, Kay Hershman of Winchester, Tennessee; grandchildren, James (Loren) Shirley of Millbrook, Alabama, David Shirley of Opelika, Alabama, and Stephen Shirley of Madison, Alabama; one great-granddaughter (her pride and joy), Violet Anne Shirley; along with numerous nieces and nephews.  Visitation was held on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022, from 4-7 p.m.  in the chapel of Grant Funeral Services in Estill Springs. Services will be conducted on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2022, at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Grant Funeral Services with Bro. Jason Heath officiating. Interment will follow in the Franklin Memorial Gardens in Winchester, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband, Bill.  Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
