The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Richland Raiders 35-14 on the road Friday in a preseason scrimmage.
The teams alternated possessions at their own 30-yard line with the Raiders pulling away in the latter half of the exhibition matchup.
Huntland head football coach Bob Robertson said the scrimmage went about as expected due to his team’s general inexperience, but he added that he saw improvements over the course of the day.
“We’ve got a lot of kids where this is the first time they’ve played in real competition. I thought we got better as it went on,” Robertson said. “We’re going to get better next week.”
The Hornets got the ball to midfield on their first possession, but a fumble would end the drive there. The Raiders quickly moved down the field and scored a touchdown to take an early 7-0 lead.
The Hornets got the ball deeper into enemy territory on their second drive. However, an interception on a long pass would again cut their scoring attempt short.
The Raiders worked the ball down the field and scored another touchdown to bring the deficit up to 14-0.
The Hornets got on the board on their next possession as Eli Wiggs connected with Trace Morris in the end zone for a passing touchdown to cut the lead down to seven points.
After the Raiders punted the ball away on their next possession, both teams rotated their backup players into the game for a few possessions.
The second-string offense would prove productive for Huntland on its first drive as quarterback Evan Keller broke free from a crowd of defenders and ran into the end zone to tie the score at 14-14.
The tie would last for a few drives before the Raiders broke through for their third touchdown of the day to retake the lead at 21-14.
The Hornets were not able to answer back in their remaining two drives while the Raiders added two more touchdowns to pull away late in the scrimmage.
The Hornets will have their next scrimmage on Friday at home against Middle Tennessee Christian School and Grundy County High School. The scrimmage is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
The Hornets will open the 2021 season on Aug. 27 at home against Whitwell High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
