The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Eagleville Eagles 87-68 at home Tuesday for their 12th loss of the season.

The Hornets kept the score close through the first three quarters, but the Eagles pulled away for good to give the Hornets their first district loss of the year.

The Eagles ended the opening period on a 12-0 run to create some early separation on the scoreboard. Colton Ray scored nine of Huntland’s 11 points in the first quarter.

The Hornets trailed 20-11 after one quarter.

The Hornets went on a 14-5 run late in the second quarter to briefly take the lead, but the Eagles would restore their advantage before the end of the half.

The Hornets trailed 42-37 at halftime.

The Eagles began the second half with a 18-4 run to push the deficit to its largest point of the day. However, the Hornets were able to respond with a 15-4 run to bring the deficit back down to single digits.

They trailed 64-56 going into the final period.

The deficit never got lower than six points in the fourth quarter as the Eagles ran up the score in the final minute to beat the Hornets by 19.

Dylan Schultz led the Hornets with 20 points for the game, followed by Ray with 12 points and Bryson Johnson and Will Jolley with 11 points each.

Garrett Jernigan scored nine points, Kaleb Stovall scored three and Eli Stevenson scored two.

With the loss, the Hornets moved to 5-12 on the season and 1-1 in district play.

They will next play Friday at home against Moore County High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
