The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Whitwell Lady Tigers 57-54 on the road Wednesday in their third and final game for the Whitwell Thanksgiving Tournament.

The game came down to the final minute with a controversial foul giving the hosting Lady Tigers a late edge as the Lady Hornets ended the round-robin tournament with a record of 0-3.

The Lady Tigers ended the opening period on a 9-2 run to put the Lady Hornets in an early hole.

Huntland trailed 15-9 after one quarter.

The Lady Hornets trailed by as many as nine points in the second quarter but bounced back with an 11-0 run which was capped off by a layup from Aysia Williams to put them in front just before halftime.

They led 27-26 at the end of the first half.

The score remained close throughout the third quarter with the Lady Hornets trailing by a score of 38-37 going into the final period.

With about 90 seconds remaining and with the Lady Hornets holding a 51-49 lead following a go-ahead 3-pointer from Bailey Morris, Huntland’s Logan McLennan appeared to draw a foul when a Whitwell player dove onto her back while both players were scrambling for a loose ball. However, McLennan would be assessed a foul on the play, and the Lady Tigers would hit both of the ensuing free throws to tie the score.

Riding the momentum of that four-point swing, the Lady Tigers scored on their next two possessions to pull ahead, and the Lady Hornets would not be able to recover as they lost by three.

Jocy May and Morris led the Lady Hornets with 14 points each for the game, followed by Ashtyn Danley with 10 points and McLennan with nine.

Williams scored five points and Kami Riley scored two.

With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 3-3 on the season.

They will next play Monday at home against Culleoka High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
