The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Cascade Lady Champions 54-45 in overtime on the road Tuesday for their 18th win of the season.
The Lady Hornets rallied from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the score in the final seconds of regulation, and they pulled away in the extra period for a victory.
The Lady Hornets fell behind early in the first quarter, but they scored the last six points of the period to take a slight lead. Logan McLennan scored six of Huntland’s 10 points in the first quarter.
They led 10-7 after one quarter.
A 3-pointer from Morgan Sanders gave the Lady Hornets their only points in the second quarter as the Lady Champions flipped the scoreboard in their favor.
Huntland trailed 18-13 at halftime.
The Lady Champions grew the deficit to double digits in the third quarter as the Lady Hornets were not able to find a consistent rhythm on offense.
Huntland trailed 31-19 going into the fourth quarter.
After the Lady Champions scored the first two points of the fourth quarter, the Lady Hornets scored 12 straight to make it a one-possession game at 33-31 with 5:17 remaining.
The teams proceeded to trade points for the next few minutes of game time with Huntland remaining a step behind until the Lady Hornets tied the score at 43-43 with 6.6 seconds left on a pair of free throws by Jocy May.
The Lady Champions had a chance to end the game in regulation when one of their players drew a shooting foul with 1.3 seconds to go, but their shooter missed both of her free throws, and the game went into overtime tied at 43-43.
The Lady Hornets scored the first five points of the extra period and iced the game with free throws as they secured the victory by nine points. McLennan scored nine of Huntland’s 11 points in overtime.
McLennan led the Lady Hornets with 31 points for the game, followed by May with 15 points and Morgan Sanders with five.
Aysia Williams scored two points and Yareli Avalos scored one.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 18-10 on the season.
They will next play Friday at home against Fayetteville City High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
