The Huntland Lady Hornets celebrate in front of the goal after beating Culleoka 2-1 Thursday in the championship game of their regional tournament.

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Culleoka Lady Warriors 2-1 at Franklin County High School Thursday in the championship game of their regional tournament.

The Lady Hornets took the lead early in the game and held off a late rally from the Lady Warriors to claim a regional title and earn the right to host a sub-state game.

Huntland head soccer coach Amanda Tipps said she was proud of her team for coming away with another victory against a quality opponent.

“We came out strong. I felt like we had a really good first half, which is what we’ve not been doing,” Tipps said, referring to her team’s tendency to outscore opponents in the second half this season. “I’m so excited and so proud of the girls for continuing to fight. That’s a really good team that we beat.”

The Lady Hornets took the lead about six minutes into the contest with Kathryn Reed chipping the ball into the net off of a pass from Logan McLennan for her eighth goal of the season.

The Lady Hornets would add to the lead later in the half as Hazel Reed received a pass from Kelly Mejia and knocked the ball past the opposing goalkeeper to make it a 2-0 game with 11 minutes remaining in the period. The goal was the 23rd of the year for Hazel Reed.

They led 2-0 at halftime.

The Lady Hornets kept up the pressure on Culleoka’s goal early in the second half, but they were not able to break through for another score.

The Lady Warriors got on the board with 17:25 remaining as their goal cut Huntland’s lead in half.

The Lady Warriors made a few more attacks on the goal in the closing minutes of the game, but the Lady Hornets held them off to secure the win by one.

With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 16-1-2 on the season.

They will next play Saturday against Adamsville High School at Franklin County High School in a sub-state game with a spot in the Class A state tournament on the line. A start time for the game had not been announced at the time of writing.
