The South Middle School Lady Trojans beat the East Lady Panthers 38-35 at home Thursday for their eighth win of the season.
The Lady Trojans built up an early lead and held off a last-minute rally to close out their regular season with a victory.
The Lady Trojans ended the opening period on a 10-3 run to create some early separation on the scoreboard.
They led 14-7 after one quarter.
The Lady Trojans led by as many as 12 points in the second quarter before the Lady Panthers scored six straight points at the end of the period to cut their advantage in half.
South led 22-16 at halftime. Na’Kayjah Holman scored 15 of South’s 22 points in the first half.
The Lady Trojans maintained a steady lead throughout the third quarter as they didn’t allow the Lady Panthers to make up any ground.
The Lady Trojans led 30-21 going into the fourth quarter.
With the Lady Trojans holding a 38-29 advantage in the final minute, the Lady Panthers forced a few turnovers and scored on three straight possessions to make it a three-point game. The Lady Panthers then stole the ball again in the closing seconds and had a chance to tie the score, but the Lady Trojans held them off until the final buzzer sounded.
Holman led the Lady Trojans with 25 points for the game, followed by Auna Foster with eight points and Sabree May and Briley Taylor with two points each.
Zoe Cole scored one point.
With the win, the Lady Trojans improved to 8-4 on the season.
They will next play Monday at home against West Middle School in a quarterfinal game for the Central Tennessee Conference tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
