The Huntland Middle School Hornets lost to the South Lawrence Stallions 67-43 at Lincoln County High School Saturday in a quarterfinal game for their sectional tournament.
The Hornets kept the score close through the first two quarters against the top-seeded Stallions, but the game would slip away from them in the second half to bring their season to an end.
The Hornets jumped out to an early 10-2 lead with a series of fast-break layups. However, the Stallions would answer back with a 12-2 run to take the lead.
The Hornets trailed 14-12 after one quarter.
The score would remain close for the entire first half, but the Stallions began to slowly increase their lead throughout the second quarter.
The Hornets trailed 29-22 at halftime.
The Stallions ended the third quarter with a 13-5 run which would put the deficit at double digits for the rest of the day. Zeier Golden scored seven of Huntland’s 11 points in the third quarter.
The Hornets trailed 50-33 going into the final period.
The Hornets were unable to make up any ground in the fourth quarter as they were eliminated from the bracket with the 24-point loss.
Golden led the Hornets with 15 points for the game, followed by Trace Kilpatrick and Tyrese Stovall with eight points each.
DaShuan Reynolds scored four points, Landon Farmer, Daltyn Howell and Ethan Sons scored two points each, and Grant Jernigan and Carson Riley scored one point each.
With the loss, the Hornets finished their season with a record of 15-8.
