The Huntland Middle School Hornets lost to the Eagleville Eagles 44-25 at Lincoln County High School Monday in a semifinal game for the Section 3A tournament.
The Hornets fell into a double-digit hole late in the first half and weren’t able to mount a comeback as their postseason run came to an end with the loss.
The Hornets scored the first five points of the game, but the Eagles proceeded to score seven straight to take the lead before the end of the opening period.
Huntland trailed 7-5 after one quarter.
The Eagles ended the first half on an 11-2 run to build the early deficit up to double digits. Ellis Stewart scored four of Huntland’s six points in the second quarter.
The Hornets trailed 22-11 at halftime.
A layup by Julius Miller gave the Hornets their only points in the third quarter as the deficit against them continued to grow.
They trailed 32-13 going into the final period.
Both teams pulled their starters midway through the fourth quarter with Eagleville’s lead still sitting at 17 points as the Hornets went on to lose by 19.
Miller and Stewart led the Hornets with eight points each for the game, followed by Luke Yarbrough with five points and Collin Frame with two.
Davis Keith and Evan Goode scored one point each.
With the loss, the Hornets finished their season with a record of 22-3.
