The Huntland Middle School Hornets lost to the Smith County Owls 58-39 at Lincoln Central Academy Thursday in the third-place game for their area tournament.
The Hornets kept the game close in the first half before an offensive surge by the Owls in the second half put the contest out of reach.
The first quarter featured a decent amount of offense from both times with the Owls holding a slight lead when the period ended. Zeier Golden scored seven of the Hornets’ nine points in the quarter.
They trailed 11-9 after one quarter.
The Owls opened the second quarter with a quick 7-0 run which put the Hornets in a decent hole for the rest of the half.
They trailed 26-22 at halftime.
The Hornets continued to keep the score close in the third quarter until the Owls ended the period on an 11-3 run to bring the deficit up to double digits.
The Hornets trailed 44-29 going into the final period.
The Hornets were not able to rally in the fourth quarter as they fell further behind before taking a loss by 19 points.
Golden led the Hornets with 15 points for the game, followed by Trace Kilpatrick with nine points and Tyrese Stovall with five.
Ethan Sons scored four points, and DaShuan Reynolds and Evan Keller scored three points each.
With the loss, the Hornets moved to 15-7 on the season.
They will next play Saturday against South Lawrence Middle School at Lincoln County High School in a first-round game for their sectional tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
