The Huntland Middle School Hornets beat the Flintville Middle School Bobcats 45-42 at Fayetteville Saturday in the first game for their divisional tournament.

The game was tied in the final seconds of the game, but a 3-pointer by Eli Wiggs would give the Hornets the win they needed to keep their season alive.

The Hornets started the game off strong to take an early lead over their opponent.

They led 14-7 after one quarter.

The Hornets were able to stay slightly ahead of the Bobcats for the remainder of the half as they went into halftime with an eight-point lead.

They led 23-15 at halftime.

The Bobcats rallied to tie the game up in the third quarter as the Hornets began to slow down offensively.

The game was tied at 31-31 going into the final period.

The contest was still tied in the final moments of the game with neither team able to create separation on the scoreboard.

Wiggs would step in as the hero for the Hornets, hitting a 3-pointer with four seconds remaining to break the tie for good and seal the win.

Braylen Phillips led the Hornets with 16 points for the game, followed by Zeier Golden with 12 points and Colin Bailey with eight.

Wiggs scored five points and Eli Morgan scored four.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 10-8 on the season.

They will next play Monday against South Lincoln Middle School at Fayetteville Middle School in the semifinals of the divisional tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
