The Franklin County Rebels beat the Forrest Rockets 6-5 at home Monday for their 13th win of the season.
The Rebels saw a three-run lead disappear in the top of the sixth, but they were able to pull back ahead in the bottom half of the sixth and held on from there for a narrow victory.
The Rockets scored the first run of the day as a two-out RBI single gave them a 1-0 edge in the top of the first.
However, the Rebels answered back quickly as Avery Jackson came through with a two-out RBI single of his own in the bottom of the first to tie the score at 1-1.
The Rebels took the lead in the bottom of the fifth as an RBI single from Layton Jones and a two-run single from Ayden Hodosi put the overall score at 4-1 late.
The Rockets had their first four batters in the top of the sixth reach base on two singles, a double and an error with all of them being brought around to score in the frame as the Rebels suddenly found themselves trailing by a 5-4 margin.
Connor Parker was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the sixth, and Ethan Stoltzfus took his place on the basepaths after hitting into a fielder’s choice. Braden Jackson and Gavin McBee then drew walks to load the bases with only one out.
Jones hit a pitch to left field for a sacrifice fly to drive in Elijah Dorrell, pinch-running for Stoltzfus, from third base as the tying run, and an error on the same play allowed Kingzli Wells, pinch-running for Braden Jackson, to race home as well to flip the scoreboard back in Franklin County’s favor.
The Rockets were retired in order in the top of the seventh as the Rebels clinched a one-run victory.
Gus Gardner pitched the first five innings for the Rebels with seven strikeouts, seven hits, three earned runs and two unearned runs allowed for the day.
Cameron Denton pitched the final two innings in relief with one strikeout, one hit, one walk and no runs allowed.
With the win, the Rebels improved to 13-8 on the season.
They will next play Tuesday at Forrest High School. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
