Lady Trojans fall to East in defensive battle

The South Middle School Lady Trojans lost to the East Lady Panthers 28-23 at home Thursday for their third loss of the season.
The teams were never separated by more than five points as the Lady Trojans kept the score close throughout but were not able to pick up a win in the defensive matchup.
The first point of the day came on a free throw by Zoe Cole, but that would be the only point for the Lady Trojans in the opening period as the Lady Panthers jumped ahead early.
South trailed 4-1 after one quarter.
The Lady Trojans found their offensive rhythm in the second quarter and took a 13-11 lead with 15 seconds remaining in the first half on a shot by Victoria Latham.
However, the Lady Panthers drew a foul as the half came to an end, and their shooter hit both of her ensuing free throws to tie the score at 13-13 at halftime.
The Lady Trojans scored the first four points of the third quarter, and that would be enough for them to lead for the rest of the quarter.
They led 17-16 going into the final period.
The Lady Panthers jumped back ahead early in the fourth quarter by scoring the first four points of the period, and the Lady Trojans remained a step behind for the rest of the day as their final deficit settled at five points.
Latham led the Lady Trojans with nine points for the game, followed by Zoe Cole with eight points and Chloe Cole with four.
Khylee Speich scored two points.
With the loss, the Lady Trojans moved to 1-3 on the season.
They will next play Monday at home against Winchester Christian Academy. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
