The Franklin County High School girls soccer team beat the Warren County Lady Pioneers 3-0 at home Monday for the team’s 12th win of the season.
All of the scoring for the day was done in the second half as Franklin County pulled away late to secure the team’s third straight shutout and its sixth straight victory overall.
Franklin County head soccer coach Kent Bean said that it was another good win for his team against a tough opponent.
“(Warren County’s) been proven all year, so to be able to come in here and score a couple goals, get all our seniors in the game, let them play and enjoy their last little bit of their final season, I’m just really proud of all the girls tonight,” he said.
FCHS senior Samantha Pfister, who exited the game in the second half with an injury, said that the contest was a mixed bag with good and bad things to take away.
“I thought our team passed very well and connected passes well, but I think we could have brought up the intensity a little bit,” she said before later referring to the team’s outlook as the postseason approaches. “I’m feeling really good about the (district) tournament. I think we’ve gotten to a point where our team is connected as a whole. We just need to continue to practice hard to play faster.”
Franklin County kept the ball on the opposing side of the field for most of the first half, but the team would not be able to break through for a go-ahead score.
The game was tied at 0-0 at halftime.
The first goal of the day came with about 27 minutes left in the second half as Osiris Rodriguez found the back of the net with a long shot for her 14th score of the season.
Franklin County scored again about a minute later as a shot from Karly Neal deflected off the hands of the opposing goalkeeper and to the feet of Cali Banks, and Banks tapped the ball into the net to grow the lead to 2-0.
The last goal of the contest came with just under five minutes to go as Banks had one shot deflected by Warren County’s goalkeeper, but she recovered her own miss and fired it right back in for her second goal of the day and her 13th of the season.
On the other end of the field, Franklin County’s defense kept the Lady Pioneers off the board for the team’s ninth shutout of the year.
With the win, Franklin County improved to 12-3-1 on the season.
The girls soccer team will next play on Oct. 10 at home against Giles County High School or Marshall County High School in a semifinal game for the District 8AA tournament. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
