The Huntland Middle School Hornets beat the Flintville Bobcats 37-36 on the road Monday for their third win of the season.

The game came down to the final seconds as a pair of free throws from Bryant Mooney with 2.5 seconds to go lifted the Hornets to a narrow victory after leading for most of the day.

The Hornets got off to a fast start on offense as they were able to build a solid early advantage for themselves. Micah Tipps scored 10 of Huntland’s 15 points in the opening period.

They led 15-7 after one quarter.

The Bobcats made up some ground in the second quarter with the Hornets still taking a multiple-possession lead into the halftime break.

Huntland led 23-17 at the end of the first half.

Tipps scored all nine of Huntland’s points in the third quarter as the Hornets continued to maintain their advantage while the Bobcats remained just a few possessions behind.

Huntland led 32-27 going into the final period.

The lead changed hands a few times in the fourth quarter with the Hornets finding themselves trailing by a slight 36-35 margin before Mooney drew a foul with 2.5 seconds remaining. Mooney hit both of his attempts from the free-throw line to flip the scoreboard and give Huntland a one-point lead late.

The Bobcats attempted to push the ball down the court quickly, but Huntland’s Davis Keith disrupted the play enough to force a timeout with one second left.

The Bobcats put up a shot from near the half-court line as the final buzzer sounded, but the ball rolled around the rim and out to give Huntland the victory by one.

Tipps led the Hornets with 23 points for the game, followed by Mooney with seven points and Evan Goode with four.

Bryson Walker scored two points and Adon Bass scored one.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 3-1 on the season.

They will next play Thursday at home against Fayetteville Middle School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
