Lady Hornets take sub-state loss at Westview

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Westview Lady Chargers 2-1 on the road Saturday in a sub-state game with a spot in the Class A state tournament on the line.
The Lady Chargers scored both of their goals in the first half, and an attempted rally from the Lady Hornets after halftime came up just short to bring an end to their season.
Huntland head soccer coach Amanda Tipps said it was a tale of two halves for her team with a slow start ultimately proving to be costly.
“I feel like we kind of came out on our heels, and (Westview) got one early. If we played the first half like we played the second half, I think it’s a different game,” she said. “We’ve just been slow starting here in the last few weeks.”
Tipps added later that it was a disappointing way to close out the year, but she was proud of the season her team had put together as a whole.
The Lady Chargers got their first goal about seven minutes into the game as a long punt from their goalkeeper was fielded by a forward who split Huntland’s defense and snuck the ball past goalkeeper Molly Tipps to give Westview a lead.
The Lady Chargers scored again off of a setup from a corner kick with 15:35 left in the first half to put the early deficit at two goals.
The Lady Hornets trailed 2-0 at halftime.
The Lady Hornets got on the board with 17:32 remaining as Piper Cox redirected a free kick from Kinsley Kilpatrick into the net with a header to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. It was the eighth goal of the season for Cox.
With the momentum for the game swinging in their favor, the Lady Hornets went on the attack for the remainder of the game, but they were unable to break through for an equalizer before time ran out as they lost by one.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets finished their season with a record of 11-6.
