The Franklin County High School girls soccer team beat the Central Magnet Lady Tigers 2-0 on the road Thursday for the team’s sixth win of the season.

Franklin County scored one goal in each half while recording a shutout on the other side of the field to pick up a victory over a Central Magnet team that finished as the Class AA state runner-up for the past two seasons.

The first goal of the day came with about 10 minutes left in the first half when a shot by Baylor Russell deflected off Central Magnet’s goalkeeper and found the feet of Cali Banks with Banks knocking the ball into the net for her fifth goal of the season.

Franklin County led 1-0 at halftime.

The advantage for Franklin County doubled about eight minutes into the second half with Russell heading the ball into the net off a corner kick from Osiris Rodriguez. It was the fourth goal of the campaign for Russell.

Franklin County continued to pressure the opposing goal throughout the rest of the game, but no other scores would come as the final deficit settled at two.

Franklin County’s defense, led by goalkeeper Brenna Carroll, recorded its fifth shutout of the season so far in the victory.

With the win, Franklin County improved to 6-3 on the season and 3-0 in district play.

The girls soccer team will next play Tuesday at home against Rockvale High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
