The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Community Viqueens 4-1 at home Thursday for their eighth win of the season.

The Lady Hornets jumped out to a big lead in the first half and were able to maintain a steady advantage the rest of the way to grab a victory in the district contest.

Huntland head soccer coach Amanda Tipps said her team got off to a stellar start which offered the opportunity to give younger players more experience on the field after halftime.

“I’m pleased with how we played. I felt like the first half was probably the best first half that we’ve played all year. I see some things starting to come together,” she said. “The second half got a little sloppy, but I was able to get some more of those other players in and try to continue to create depth.”

The Lady Hornets scored their first goal about 14 minutes into the game as Bristol Moon deflected a cross from Piper Cox into the net for her third goal of the season.

The early lead doubled about five minutes later as Cox received a pass from Lizbeth Almaraz and fired a shot in from the top of the goal box to make it a 2-0 game. The goal was the seventh of the season for Cox.

The last score of the first half came with about 14 minutes left until halftime as Raegan Johnson hit a long shot which found the back of the net after receiving a pass from Bella Smith.

The Lady Hornets led 3-0 at halftime.

Johnson added to the Huntland lead with 32 minutes remaining in the contest as she scored on another long kick off an assist from Evelyn Perez to put the deficit at 4-0. Johnson has three goals on the season for the Lady Hornets.

The starters for the Lady Hornets began being rotated out of the game midway through the second half as they remained in firm control of the scoreboard.

The Viqueens were awarded a penalty kick with about six minutes to go and nailed the attempt to avoid a shutout.

However, the Lady Hornets didn’t allow any more ground to be made up as they won by three.

With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 8-3 on the season and 7-1 in district play.

They will next play Tuesday at home against Cornersville High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
