4-H Chick Chain show and sale is Sept. 16

Franklin County 4-H will host its much-anticipated 4-H Chick Chain show at 8 a.m. on Sept. 16 at the Franklin County Farmers Market, located at 803 Dinah Shore Blvd. in Winchester.

The 4-H Chick Chain live sale will immediately follow at 9 a.m. with 4-H’ers offering approximately 50 pens of five hens each for sale by public auction. All buyers are welcome.

Breeds will include black star and Rhode Island red. Proceeds from the auction will go to the 4-H Chick Chain Project.

There will also be a profit-share check given to each 4-H member if the birds sell for more than this year’s expenses.

UT Extension Agent Hunter Isbell urges everyone to attend the show. Franklin County 4-H currently has 83 4-H members participating in the 4-H Chick Chain Project.

“Please come out and support the youth of our county,” Isbell said. “The 4-H Chick Chain is one of Tennessee’s most-recognized 4-H projects.”

The project teaches 4-H’ers recommended management practices for growing and raising chickens.

“By participating, 4-H members develop poultry-management skills, learn to produce healthy chickens, develop record-keeping skills including income and expenses, contribute to the home food supply and realize the pride of accomplishment,” Isbell said.

4-H is an educational, positive youth-development program of UT/TSU Extension-Franklin County and is available to all youths in grades 4-12.

All 4-H programs such as in-school clubs, project groups or judging teams focus on active involvement and high-quality educational experiences provided by staff and volunteers.

Extension offers programs in agricultural and natural resources, 4-H youth development, family and consumer sciences and resource development.

Anyone interested in enrolling a youth or volunteering in any of the 4-H activities may call Isbell for more information at 931-967-2741.
