RAYMOND TORSTENSON
TORSTENSON, Raymond Henry, age 81, of Winchester, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2023. He was born in Pensacola, Florida, on Feb. 10, 1942, to the late R.L. “Rip” and Anne Marie (Dahlke) Torstenson. Before his retirement, Ray was employed at Boeing in Huntsville, Alabama, for 32 years, where he worked on the space shuttle and lunar rover programs, which were an integral part of the space program. He was an accomplished artist and woodworker, focusing on handcrafting dulcimers. Ray was a co-founder and long-time member of the Multi-County Cancer Support Network and was a member of Franklin County Arts Guild. He was a devoted member of Harmony Cumberland Presbyterian Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed being on his boat and traveling. His family will remember his kind nature and wonderful sense of humor. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Jacqueline Bishop Torstenson and brother, Charles Torstenson. He is survived by his loving children, Mark (Lucia Cape) Torstenson, Kim (Ed) Land, Eric (Amy) Torstenson and Pam (Chris) Parker; grandchildren, Shelby Land, Torsten Land, Anna Parker, Jack Parker, Evelyn Torstenson and Julian Torstenson; and niece, Victoria “Vivi” Nixon. Visitation was held on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023, from 5-8 p.m. at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home in Winchester, Tennessee. Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023, at 1 p.m. at Harmony Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Dr. Joe Butler officiating. Interment followed in the Harmony Cemetery. CARL FARRIS
FARRIS, Carl Edward, age 69, of Nashville, passed away on Monday, Aug. 28, 2023, at the Alive Hospice facility in Murfreesboro. He was born in Winchester on Jan. 28, 1954, to the late Clarence and Annie (Clark) Farris. In his younger years, Carl worked as a machinist and then served civil warrants until his retirement. Following retirement, he joined the Sugar Creek Band and was their lead singer, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. In his spare time he enjoyed playing pool and golf. Carl was a member of the Woodson Chapel Church of Christ. He will be remembered for his outgoing personality and great sense of humor as well as for being a talented singer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Helen McCallie, Imogene Neal, Jack Farris, John Farris and Daniel Farris. Carl is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Patricia Farris; children, Angie McMahan, Connie Farris, Alan Farris and Andria (Ken) Baker; grandchildren, Chaise McMahan, Ryley Kesling, Heather (Eric) Randolph, and Hanna Baker; great-grandsons, Kade and Koa’di; siblings, William Clyde Farris, David Farris and Stella Reiben; and several nieces and nephews. CHANDA STONE
STONE, Chanda Renee Bedwell, age 52, of Huntland, Tennessee, departed this life suddenly on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2023, at STRHS-Winchester, following a brief illness. Mrs. Stone was born in Fayetteville, Tennessee, on Aug. 28, 1970, to the late John Wilson Bedwell, Jr. and Brenda Walker Bedwell. She was the 1988 valedictorian of her high school graduating class at Huntland High School. She went on to receive her master’s degree several years later from MTSU. Mrs. Stone was an elementary school teacher at Huntland for 31 years. She has just begun teaching at Sparkman Middle School in Toney, Alabama this school year. She was very active with the 4-H program over the years in Franklin County and would do anything to help her students. Her favorite pastime was shopping, and she loved to shop for her entire family. She loved cooking and gardening. She will be remembered as a loving sister, aunt and niece who had a loving and giving heart and a beautiful smile. Mrs. Stone was a 20-year member of the Covenant Christian Church in Belvidere. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Stone was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Doug and Nadine Walker and paternal grandparents, John Wilson Bedwell, Sr. and Wilma Spurlock Bedwell. She is survived by her husband of 21 years, Tony Stone; sisters, Christy “Cricket” “(Tim) Vernon and Candice “Candy” (Jerome) Haddon, all of Huntland; stepdaughter, Amanda (Travis)Hart of Cookeville, Tennessee; stepson, Zachary Stone of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; step-grandson, Cooper Joseph Goodnight; son-in-love, Jaray Taylor of the U.S. Marine Corp., formerly from Belvidere, Tennessee; nephews, Chase Vernon of Shelbyville, Tennessee, and Blain (Megan) Maxwell of Flintville, Tennessee; niece, Haley (Jordan) Gyurnek of Huntland, Tennessee; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Visitation was held on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2023, from 5-8 p.m. in the chapel of Grant Funeral Services. Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Grant Funeral Services with Pastor Pat Kelley, officiating. Interment followed in Franklin Memorial Gardens in Winchester.
ANNIE TRIGG
TRIGG, Annie Mae Johnson, age 87, was born May 7, 1936, to the late Ernest Johnson and Ethel Patton Johnson. She was one of nine children and the last to depart this earthly realm. She resided in Franklin County until the end of 2019, when she moved to Georgia with her daughter and granddaughter who took care of her until she completed her journey in their home on Aug. 28, 2023. She was a member of Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church in Winchester, Tennessee, where the late Elder Clarence McGhee was her former pastor and current Shepherd is Pastor Grayson. In addition to her parents, Annie was preceded in death by her husband, Albert “Jack” Trigg; sisters, Pearl Wider, Betty Brown, Normeda Dartis and Hazel Childress; brothers, William, Robert, Cornelius and Charles Johnson; son-in-law, Randy Zachary; brother-in-law, Charlie Childress, Sr.; and sister-in-law Wilma Johnson. To cherish her memory are her daughter, Jackie Vanzant-Zachary; granddaughter, Randi Zachary; God granddaughter, Alana Duncan; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. FRED APPEL
APPEL, Fred Andrew, Loving husband, father and brother, Fred Andrew Appel of Estill Springs, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023, after a short battle with lung cancer. Fred was born on Feb. 8, 1943, to Donald and Edna Appel in Colfax, Washington. After Fred graduated from Colfax High School in 1961, he went on to earn a bachelor of science in both electrical and mechanical engineering at Washington State University. He then proceeded to earn a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering at Purdue University. After the completion of his master’s degree, he served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy at the U.S. Naval Repair Base San Diego. After the Navy, Fred started an impressive 40-year career in manufacturing and operations leadership. In 1967, Fred married Janet Lee Baker in Vancouver, Washington. Fred and Janet went on to have four sons, Andrew, Brian, Glenn and Dennis. Fred’s life revolved around being a husband and father, which he loved. In 2007, Fred retired and spent time with family at his lake house in Estill Springs, volunteering at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, participating in the Knights of Columbus, and rooting for the Nashville Predators as an inaugural and annual season ticket holder. Fred is survived by his wife, Janet of 56 years, his four sons and their wives, Andrew and Teresa, Brian and Laurie, Glenn, and Dennis and Mei; his 10 grandchildren, Matthew, Jason, Katherine, Ashley, Zachary, David, Owen, Sophia, Mackenzie and Aidan; as well as his eight siblings, Dick, Dave, Tony, Donna, Colleen, Steve, Laurette and Renata. A visitation for Fred’s family and friends will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023, from 6-8 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Decherd, Tennessee. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church followed by a luncheon at 11 a.m. at the Moore Cortner Funeral Home in Winchester, Tennessee.
