FC girls soccer blows out Giles County in home district contest

The Franklin County High School girls soccer team beat the Giles County Lady Bobcats 9-0 at home Tuesday for the team’s eighth win of the season.
Franklin County steadily built up the lead throughout the contest and triggered the mercy rule with 11 minutes to go as the team secured an undefeated district record for the regular season with the blowout victory.
The first goal came about 10 minutes into the contest as Osiris Rodriguez received a pass from Samantha Pfister and fired a long, high shot into the net for her 11th goal of the season.
Franklin County scored again about two minutes later with Baylor Russell recording a goal off an assist from Caitlyn Cashion to quickly make it a 2-0 game.
The next goal for Franklin County came with about 20 minutes left in the first half with Gracen Baggett finding the corner of the net with a shot off of another assist from Cashion. It was the fifth goal of the season for Baggett.
Cali Banks added to the lead with about two minutes to go until halftime as she found the net with a shot after multiple close misses for Franklin County’s offense.
Franklin County added one more first-half goal a minute later as Russell scored off an assist from Banks for her second goal of the day and her seventh of the year.
Franklin County led 5-0 at halftime.
The offensive onslaught continued in the second half for Franklin County with Banks receiving a cross from Danika Arellano and scoring from there about five minutes into the period. It was the second goal of the day and the ninth of the season for Banks.
Valeria Gomez joined the scoring effort for Franklin County a few minutes later as she took the ball at midfield, drove down and fired a shot into the net for her third goal of the campaign.
Keira McFarlane recorded her first goal of the season midway through the second half to bring the deficit up to 8-0 late.
Riley Howell struck the final blow for Franklin County as she scored on a breakaway opportunity with 11 minutes remaining, and the resulting 9-0 deficit invoked the mercy rule to end the contest early. It was the fourth goal of the season for Howell.
With the win, Franklin County improved to 8-3-1 on the season and 5-0 in district play.
The girls soccer team will next play Monday at Shelbyville Central High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
