The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Cascade Lady Champions 2-0 at home Monday for their sixth win of the season.
The Lady Hornets scored both of their goals in the first half while their defense recorded its second shutout of the season to secure the district victory.
Huntland head soccer coach Amanda Tipps said it was a big win for her team and added that her midfield and defensive line played tough to help hold off plenty of scoring chances from Cascade.
She also said that goalkeeper Molly Tipps stepped up in a big way with a shutout performance that included multiple saves in one-on-one situations against opposing players.
The Lady Hornets struck for their first goal about 13 minutes into the game with Piper Cox scoring off an assist from Hazel Reed to break a scoreless tie.
Cox scored again with about two minutes left in the first half as she received a pass from Marley Phillips and broke through the defense for her second goal of the day and her fifth of the season to put Huntland up 2-0.
The Lady Hornets led 2-0 at halftime.
Neither team would put up any goals in the second half with Huntland’s defense, led by Molly Tipps, ensuring that the Lady Champions wouldn’t be able to mount a comeback in the two-goal victory.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 6-3 on the season and 6-1 in district play.
They will next play Tuesday at Cornersville High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
