Hornets face Community, Providence Christian in road scrimmage

The Huntland High School Hornets played the Community Vikings and the Providence Christian Academy Lions in a three-team scrimmage Friday at Community.

The scrimmage involved each team having three possessions of 10 plays each starting from their own 20-yard line as well as two red-zone possessions where the teams ran a series of plays while being 10 yards away from the end zone.

The Hornets recorded four total touchdowns for the day with two being put up against each team, and they allowed a total of two touchdowns for the scrimmage. The Lions tallied three total touchdowns for the day while the Vikings scored two on their home field.

Huntland head football coach Kermit Reed said that the exhibition contest revealed issues on offense for his team which will need to be worked on in the coming weeks.

“We’ve got a lot of mistakes to clean up on offense. Defensively, I thought we played well,” he said. “We were going hard, but we were missing assignments. It would be one person each play, and on offense, if you make a mistake, it shows up.”

No touchdowns would be recorded in the first two possessions as Community’s offense failed to score on PCA’s defense, and PCA’s offense was similarly held off the board by Huntland’s defensive unit.

The Hornets opened up the scoring for the day against the Vikings as quarterback Evan Keller threw a long pass to Lashawn Kimmons who beat his defender to the ball and outran the defense from there to complete the 60-yard touchdown pass on their fifth play of the possession.

The Lions joined Huntland on the scoreboard as they put up a rushing touchdown against the Vikings on the ninth play of their second possession.

The Hornets had the ball next against PCA’s defense with Jarren Kinslow breaking off a long run on the first play of the drive to give the Hornets excellent field position.

BJ Summers finished the drive a few plays later with a rushing touchdown to give the Hornets the overall scoring lead again.

The Hornets’ defense then succeeded in keeping Community scoreless with the defensive highlights including an interception by RJ Martin early in the possession.

None of the three teams were able to find the end zone in the remaining 10-play possessions as the remainder of the scrimmage moved to the red-zone format.

The Vikings took full advantage of the new setup as they put up one touchdown each against the Lions and the Hornets to complete their scoring for the day.

The Lions also scored a touchdown against the Hornets in their next offensive possession to put all three teams at two touchdowns scored for the scrimmage.

The Hornets reclaimed the overall scoring lead on their next possession, however, as Kinslow carried the ball into the end zone for a touchdown against the Vikings.

The Hornets maintained possession as the Lions took the field on defense, and Kinslow scored a rushing touchdown against them as well to round out Huntland’s scoring in the contest.

The final possession of the scrimmage saw the Lions score another touchdown against the Vikings to end the day.

The Hornets will have their next scrimmage Friday in a jamboree at Loretto High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

They are scheduled to open their 2023 season on Aug. 18 at home against Whitwell High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
