FC girls soccer routs Riverdale in preseason matchup

The Franklin County High School girls soccer team beat the Riverdale Lady Warriors 9-1 at home Tuesday in a preseason scrimmage.
Franklin County scored early and often as the team steadily pulled away for a dominant victory in preparation for the upcoming season.
Baylor Russell got the scoring started for Franklin County as she scored two goals early in the first half with assists coming from Cali Banks and Sadie Moore.
Osiris Rodriguez added a goal to make it 3-0 later in the half before Russell completed a first-half hat trick to put the early advantage at 4-0.
Banks rounded out the scoring for the first half as she deflected a shot off of the opposing goalkeeper, fielded her own rebound and sent the ball right back into the net.
Franklin County led 5-0 at halftime.
Franklin County maintained its offensive momentum in the second half with Karly Neal netting a goal off of an assist from Banks to resume the scoring.
The Lady Warriors got on the board in the second half to avoid a shutout, but Russell recorded her fourth goal of the day later in the half, and Keira McFarlane added a score of her own to push the advantage up to 8-1.
Carly Smith contributed the final goal of the evening for Franklin County off of an assist from Sydney Webb to put the final deficit for the blowout victory at eight.
The FCHS girls soccer team will have its next scrimmage on Thursday at Summit High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The team will open its 2023 season on Aug. 15 at Lawrence County High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
