Citing health reasons, Cowan Mayor Mark Ledbetter has stepped down from his position.

Ledbetter submitted a letter of resignation dated June 2 to the Cowan City Council stating his stance.

“I find that I must resign from the office of mayor due to health reasons,” he said. “I thank the council for the time that we have had to work together and the citizens for the time you have allowed me to serve.”

He was not specific about what the medical conditions are that he is facing.

Ledbetter’s stepping down opened the door for Vice Mayor Anthony Ingle to become interim mayor.

Ingle said Wednesday that he will be filling the role for certain through the Aug. 3 municipal election.

He explained that his council term expires at that point, and at present, it is unclear whether he would be able to continue on in filling the remainder of Ledbetter’s term which concludes in 2025.

“I know for at least the next three months what I will be doing,” Ingle said, adding that he will be meeting with the city’s legal counsel to determine what options lie in store.

In the meantime, Ingle said he will be meeting Friday with city employees to assess the direction he and they think the city should take with him as interim mayor.

“We’ll take it from there,” he said, referring to what the next steps will be.
