Tips for creating a summer of unplugged fun
Summer can be an ideal time to focus on unplugged learning as it often brings a break from the traditional academic year and activities.
The following ideas may help parents inspire children to take a break from their video games.
In addition to the summer camps and activities listed below, there are Vacation Bible School camps, 4-H camps, art camps, performing arts camps, music camps, summer-school enrichment programs such as STEM camp and sports camps. The Franklin County Library is hosting a free summer reading program for all youths now through June 30. After completing 10 challenges, patrons may choose from several prizes. In addition, the library hosts the Franklin County Chess Club on Saturdays from 8-11 a.m. along with STEM activities. More information on library activities can be found at franklincountylibrary.org.
A Junior Ranger Camp for 9-11-year-olds will be held June 26-30 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Nature Center inside Tims Ford State Park. St. Andrew’s-Sewanee will be offering an overnight camp July 9-16 and July 16-23 on the school’s 550-acre campus. The camp is for ages 11-15 and provides a wide variety of activities to choose from. For information on cost and times, visit sasweb.org/summer/sas-summer-camp.

The Spirit of America Youth Boating Camp will be held July 24-28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for 12-15-year-olds at the recreation hall located inside Tims Ford State Park. Students will learn water safety, receive a Tennessee boating license and experience three days of water training with multiple types of boats. Space is limited. Cost is $85.
