Little League players from Winchester, Estill Springs and Cowan competed in the District 8 10U and 8U all-star tournaments over the weekend in Tullahoma.

The 10U teams played at Waggoner Park in Tullahoma while the 8U tournament was held at Cascade Park elsewhere in the city.

The Winchester 10U and Cowan/Estill 8U squads both entered Sunday with chances to advance to their respective district title games, but the two teams ultimately settled for third-place finishes in their divisions.

Winchester 10U got off to a strong start with a 16-6 victory over Spring Hill in the opening round of the 10U tournament.

A 13-run second inning gave Winchester a 14-1 advantage early in the contest with a few more runs in the bottom of the fourth putting the game fully out of reach.

Winchester 10U returned to action Saturday with a 17-5 victory over Columbia Blue to move on to the bracket’s semifinals.

A Winchester run in the first inning, four more runs in the fourth and three scores in the fifth gave the team a 9-0 lead late.

Columbia Blue put up five runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit down to four, but a nine-run frame by Winchester in the top of the sixth provided an ultimately insurmountable 12-run edge.

Winchester 10U’s first game on Sunday was against Columbia Red with this Columbia squad getting the better of Winchester by a score of 7-5.

Winchester fell behind early after Columbia Red put up three runs in the top of the first, but a lone run in the bottom half of the first and four runs in the bottom of the second put Winchester up by a 5-3 margin early.

That lead for Winchester held until the top of the sixth when Columbia Red pushed across four runs to take the lead, and Winchester’s batters were retired in order in the bottom of the sixth to close out the team’s first loss.

The elimination semifinal game for the 10U bracket was played between Winchester 10U and Tullahoma Cardinal a few hours later with Winchester losing by a 19-9 margin.

Both teams got off to fast starts with Winchester holding a 7-3 lead in the top of the second before a six-run frame from Tullahoma Cardinal flipped the scoreboard into a 9-7 deficit.

Winchester’s offense stalled in the remaining innings with Tullahoma Cardinal triggering the mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth to eliminate Winchester from the bracket.

Cowan/Estill Springs 8U began its Coach Pitch bracket with a 14-8 victory over Spring Hill White Friday to start off on a positive note.

The next game for Cowan/Estill Springs 8U came down to the wire as the team rallied for a 13-12 victory over Columbia Blue in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

The teams were tied at 8-8 at the end of the fourth inning, but Columbia Blue outscored Cowan/Estill Springs 4-1 in the fifth inning to take a 12-9 lead late.

Columbia Blue needed just three runs in the top of the sixth to end the game early, but Cowan/Estill Springs held the opposition scoreless to remain within striking distance.

The team then rallied in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double by Hayden Hammer and a two-run single by Peyton Smith tying the score at 12-12 before Zade Pelham hit a walk-off single to give Cowan/Estill Springs the dramatic victory.

However, the first loss for Cowan/Estill Springs 8U came one game later on Sunday as the team took a 14-2 defeat to Tullahoma.

Tullahoma held Cowan/Estill Springs to just five total hits in the contest while steadily pulling away for the decisive victory.

Cowan/Estill Springs 8U then matched up with Columbia Red in the elimination semifinals later in the day and took an 18-4 loss to end the squad’s tournament run.

Columbia Red hit the five-run limit in three of the four innings played in the contest with Cowan/Estill Springs not being able to match that scoring pace in the loss.

Other local teams in action for the weekend included the Estill Springs 10U team and the Winchester 8U team with both squads being eliminated from their respective brackets by two straight losses.

Estill Springs 10U got off to a tough start with the 15-0 loss to Tullahoma Cardinal to open the 10U tournament on Friday.

Estill Springs was held hitless across the game’s three innings before Tullahoma Cardinal triggered the mercy rule to bring a quick end to the contest.

Estill Springs 10U followed that up with a 13-11 loss to Tullahoma Black in an elimination game Saturday.

Tullahoma Black was in control early as the team held a 10-1 lead after four innings. Estill Springs put up five runs in the top of the fifth to cut into the deficit, but Tullahoma Black added three more scores in the bottom half of the inning to put the late score at 13-6.

Estill Springs scored another five runs in the top of the sixth and got the potential tying run on base with two outs, but the rally would fall just short as the loss eliminated Estill Springs from the bracket.

Winchester 8U opened its bracket with an 18-3 loss to Columbia Blue Friday as Columbia Blue scored as many runs as possible in every frame while Winchester scored three times in the first inning before being held scoreless for the rest of the night.

Winchester 8U then fell to Spring Hill White by a score of 18-7 Saturday in an elimination game.

Winchester matched pace with Spring Hill White early, trailing by a slim 8-7 margin after two innings. However, Spring Hill White dominated the rest of the game and wrapped up the 11-run victory after five innings.

The members of the Winchester 10U team were Russell Barnett, Connor Blevins, Andrew Boswell, Finley Brown, Mayson Cates, Bo Jackson, Parks Knapper, Peyton Mason, Frank McGill, Woods McGill, Jacob Sons and Caleb Steele.
