FC tracksters compete in state meet

Seven members of the Franklin County High School boys and girls track and field teams competed in the Class AAA state championship meet Thursday at Middle Tennessee State University.
The Franklin County tracksters recorded three top-10 finishes at the meet, including two trips to the top-eight awards podium.
Kahlynia Vanzant recorded the best finish of the day for Franklin County as she finished sixth in the girls 200-meter dash with a time of 24.84 seconds, taking 0.25 seconds off of her qualifying time from sectionals. Memphis Central’s Jaitlyn Ware finished first overall in the 200 with a mark of 24.04 seconds.
Vanzant also competed in the girls 100-meter dash earlier in the meet and narrowly missed out on a trip to the awards podium with a time of 12.26 seconds putting her in ninth place. John Overton High’s Kymora-Lee Williams finished first in the 100 with a mark of 11.58 seconds as all 16 competitors in the event finished less than a second apart.
Franklin County’s boys 4×100-meter relay team of Eric Jones, Coastlon Ringer, Na’Zaiyah Holman and NaShawn Holman also earned medals after finishing eighth in their event with a time of 42.28 seconds as they broke their own school record of 42.55 seconds that was set during their sectional meet.
The Franklin County relay team finished ahead of Collierville by 0.14 seconds for the final spot on the podium while Memphis Central broke the state record with a time of 40.86 seconds to take first place in the event.
NaShawn Holman returned to the track later in the meet to compete in the boys 200-meter dash and finished 13th with a time of 21.95 seconds. Memphis Central’s Jordan Ware came in first place for the 200 with a new state record of 20.63 seconds.
In the field events, Lily Heath represented Franklin County in the girls triple jump and finished 16th for the day with a high mark of 31 feet, 7.25 inches. The winner of the triple jump was Memphis Central’s Akira Simpson with a leap of 40 feet, 4 inches.
Abby Phrommala rounded out the competitors for Franklin County as she finished 16th in the girls pole vault with a mark of 7 feet. Green Hill’s Carolina Bannach would take the top prize for the event with a vault of 12 feet.
The state meet marked the end of the season for the Franklin County High School boys and girls track and field teams.
