STLS scholarships presented to area students

College scholarships were presented to area seniors during the May meeting of the Southern Tennessee Ladies’ Society.

This meeting is the most important meeting of the year for the STLS as it culminates the members’ fundraising efforts.

STLS President Margaret Thomas welcomed members and guests and relaxed the crowd with humorous quotes.

Before introducing the 2023 scholarship recipients, Wanda Lawson, scholarship chairman, provided information to guests in attendance about the society’s scholarship program, saying the first scholarship was awarded in 2010.

“At the end of 2023, 103 scholarships will have been given totaling $309,000,” Lawson noted. “This year’s recipients will receive $3,500 each for the college of their choice.”

Past winners Kristen Weaver Lusk (2018) and Kennedy Brady (2020) of Grundy County gave their thanks to the STLS and offered advice to the future college freshmen in attendance.

“It is always a treat to hear from past recipients,” Lawson said. “It matters when we can give a helping hand and support to these kids.”

The eight recipients of the 2023 scholarships include: Emilia Wright-Walls of Franklin County, Zaylan Spinner of Tullahoma, Autumn Schwartz of Lincoln County, Sierra Arguello of Fayetteville City, Jamie Pierce of Coffee County, Elizabeth Johnson of Huntland, Aiden Lusk of Grundy County and Aubrey Rogers of Moore County.

The STLS meetings will be suspended during June and July but will resume in a fun mode on Aug. 2 as they plan to play bingo. For reservations to the August meeting, call Tina at 931-967-4813. Meetings are held at the Franklin County Country Club. Lunch is $15.
