Anderson receives nursing accolades, invited to World Congress

Franklin County native Dr. Mary Anderson recently received several awards including a nomination for the Student Daisy Award at Herzing University as well as the STAR award in teaching and education excellence.

In addition, she will be a delegate at the third annual World Congress on Nursing and Healthcare overseas in London in August.

Readers may recall an article in the Herald Chronicle on March 18, 2020, about Anderson, a doctor of nursing practice at a community college in Santa Clara County, California, at that time, being one of the first nurses who became seriously ill with coronavirus at the start of the pandemic.

She recovered and has been involved as a mentor to other nursing educators in the United States and internationally for the past five years.

In addition, she has been involved in medical missions since 2015.

The Student Daisy Award given by Herzing University was presented to Dr. Anderson for going above and beyond in her practice as a nurse-practitioner student.

The STAR award was presented for excellence as a professor in nursing, going above and beyond in education and humanitarian efforts by the Association of Nurse Educators.

Dr. Anderson is especially excited for her latest honor, to have been invited to speak at the World Congress in London on Aug. 21. The goal of the trip is to be a delegate for the United States in healthcare and nursing.

She will be meeting delegates from around the world, the health ministry and the World Congress team.

“I was speechless when the event planners asked me to be a delegate,” Dr. Anderson said. “What an honor to represent both the U.S., my community, nursing and healthcare. I believe my topics will be how education and healthcare can influence the world in elevating those countries and individuals out of poverty and into a better life. To have the world as your platform is an amazing opportunity.”

Dr. Anderson is asking for donations or sponsorships to help with the trip to the UK. Money donated will be allocated to the flight over, a delegate fee and a charity on health education.

She can be reached at 256-424-2361 or Marymedasst@gmail.com for anyone interested in a sponsorship.

About Dr. Anderson

Anderson, who graduated from Franklin County High School in 2000, is a leading professor at several universities in the field of nursing, science and healthcare and is an adjunct professor for Los Angeles Pacific University.

Currently, she is the head of a project in Liberia to increase the space and educational programs for a small village’s nursing program.

Her current mission in Liberia started in 2020 during the pandemic. She was able to get the village’s first computer, assist with funding to develop their first master’s program and build a classroom.

The village’s head nurse, Peter Mubiaw, was so thankful and encouraged by Dr. Anderson that he decided to be the first in his family to apply to a Ph.D. program. Dr. Anderson was surprised by the entire village through a video call in 2022 as a thank-you.

Anderson received her degree at Herzing University in a postgraduate program for family-nurse-practitioner certification.

She also went to Chamberlain University and received her Doctor of Nursing Practice graduate degree, master’s degrees in nursing science and nursing education and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

She also received her Associate of Science degree for registered nursing at Breckinridge College of Nursing in Alabama.
