MICHAEL GAVLICK
GAVLICK Michael Hill, Col., age 77, of Wartrace, passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at his residence while surrounded by his loving family. Col. Gavlick was born on Dec. 23, 1945, in Memphis, Tennessee, to the late Anthony and Colleen Yearwood Gavlick. In 1968, he enlisted in the United States Marines, where he served for 24 years. Col. Gavlick received two master’s degrees from Pepperdine University and Stanford University. Following his retirement from the Marines, he received his PhD on May 10, 2002, from Vanderbilt Peabody College in Leadership Higher Education. He later became a professor at Vanderbilt University, where he taught Leadership in Higher Education for nine years. In his spare time, he enjoyed listing to 50’s and 60’s rock and roll music, being outdoors and collecting baseball cards and stamps. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth Gavlick and brother, John Gavlick. Col. Gavlick is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Jung Sook Kim Gavlick of Wartrace, and daughter, Cathy Eledge of Florida. JANICE JENKINS
JENKINS, Janice Michelle Ray, age 54 of Shelbyville, died on April 30, 2023. She was preceded in death by her father, Jerry L. Ray. Survivors: son, Justin Jenkins; mother, Ellen Farrar Ray; brother, Rusty (Janet) Ray; nephew, Caleb Ray. Memorial services were held May 7, 2023, at Jennings-Moore-Cortner Funeral Home.
HILDA HASTY
HASTY, Hilda Jean, age 84, of Estill Springs, passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2023. A native of Franklin County, she was born on Aug. 4, 1938, to the late Oliver Edison and Zelma Irene (Arnold) Benson. Before her retirement, she had been employed in the banking industry. She enjoyed sewing and had worked as a seamstress in her younger years. In her spare time, Jean enjoyed working in her flower gardens, singing, fishing and camping with her husband, especially to Gatlinburg and Florida. She was a dedicated member of Riva Lake Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and occasionally was the song leader. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Austin Benson and an infant brother; son, Bobby Douglas Hasty; son-in-law Robby Gass; and brother-in -law, Hal A. Bradford. Jean is survived by her loving husband of over 64 years, Bobby Hasty; children, Jeanene Tobitt (Danny) and Teresa Fontaine (Tony); grandchildren, Philip Pendleton, Erin Clark and Amanda Buckner; great-grandchildren, Laars Pendleton, Daegan Pendleton, Cameron Gilliam, Caydon Bradford, Coralynn Clark, Caden Clark, Adrianna Buckner and Kendyl Buckner; and sister, Corene Bradford. Visitation was held on Friday, May 5, 2023, from 5-8 p.m. at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at noon in the chapel of Moore-Cortner Funeral Home with Bro. Larry Sanders officiating. Interment followed at Franklin Memorial Gardens with Billy Hasty, Cameron Gilliam, Caydon Bradford, Laars Pendleton, Jeff Farris and Dwight Modesitt serving as pallbearers. JAMES CROWE
CROWE, JAMES Robert, age 77, of Estill Springs, Tennessee, departed this life on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at his residence, following an extended illness. Mr. Crowe was born in Decherd, Tennessee, on April 23, 1946, to the late Steve Crowe and Jennie Mae Stephens Crowe. He was a member of the End Time Mission Church in Estill Springs, Tennessee. He was employed for approximately 25 years for the Coffee County Board of Education as a mechanic at the school bus garage. His hobbies were fishing and restoring old cars. He was known for his kind heart and dry sense of humor. He was an easy going man who could get along with anyone. He will be remembered as a loving brother, father and grandfather who will be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, Mr. Crowe was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Frances Crowe; brother, Johnny Crowe; and sister, Nina Sue Leath. He is survived by his son, Mark Crowe and wife, Missy of Huntland, Tennessee; daughter, Michelle Howard of Estill Springs, Tennessee; half-brother, Nathan Pratt of Winchester; grandchildren, Shane Meeks of Huntland, Casey Crowe and wife, Breanna of Winchester, Jacob Crowe of Huntland, and Austin Howard and wife, Lucia of Winchester; and several great-grandchildren. Visitation was held on Friday, May 5, 2023, from 5-8 p.m. in the chapel of Grant Funeral Services. Services were held on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Grant Funeral Services with Pastor Johnny Turner officiating. Interment followed in Franklin Memorial Gardens in Winchester.
PETE HALL
HALL, Pete M., age 85, was called home on Thursday, May 4, 2023. He was born to John and Pearlie Ann Hall in Belvidere, Tennessee, on June 3, 1937. As a young man, Pete served in the Navy, traveling to many parts of the world, an interest he would maintain for life. While in the Navy, Pete met the love of his life, Shirley Ann Goodman. They married, and Pete added the many Goodmans to his heart. Together Pete and Shirley had three children and built a beautiful family and farm. After serving his country, Pete took a job at Cumberland Motor Parts, honing his skills as a machinist, mechanic and tinkerer. Always a hard worker, Pete used these skills to build a new career at Arnold Engineering Development Center while maintaining his full-time farming. He accomplished much in both careers and retired from Arnold well-liked and well-respected while continuing to run his farm for the rest of his life. In addition to an impressive work ethic, Pete knew how to pursue hobbies and passions to enrich his life and enrich the lives of others. He spent many years traveling the continent to explore new trails with his friends and his favorite horse, B.J. At home and on his trips, Pete loved to cook a hot and hearty meal for his many friends or extended family gathered around his hearth or at his camp. Later in life he also developed a passion for making wine, perfecting his recipes and sharing much of the wine with his friends. This was just a fraction of the generosity Pete showed throughout his life. He was always happy to fill a bag with garden vegetables or frozen meat and swap a story. Pete died peacefully on the farm, leaving behind his wife, Shirley Goodman Hall; his daughters, Patricia Hall Sutton and Gay Hall Luthi (Dwight); and his son, Mark Hall. He leaves behind five grandchildren, Caleb Sutton (Alexandra), Joshua Alexander (Erica), Kelsey Sutton, Sage Hall and Logan Dudley. He was blessed with two great-grandchildren as well, Mara Alexander and Peter Sutton. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, Hoyte, John, James and Donald Hall. Pete will be deeply missed by his family, which was the greatest joy and passion of his life. Visitation was held on Sunday, May 7, 2023, from noon to 3 p.m. at Watson Funeral Home with funeral services following at 3 p.m. in the Roy B. Watson Chapel of Watson Funeral Home. TOM KNOWLES JR.
KNOWLES, Tom Rye, Jr. of Cowan, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, May 5, 2023. He was born on Aug. 19, 1942, His death follows a battle with leukemia and was just how he wanted—quick and peaceful, with no pain. He will be remembered as a musician, model railroader, NC&StL historian, avid collector of antique gas engines, car buff, artist, mentor and more—a true Renaissance Man. Tom is survived by his wife, Maryann Knowles; daughter, Debi and Paul Borowski; granddaughter, Tiffany Knowles; sister, Cathy Carter; and numerous other family members. A celebration of his life (including a jam session) will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2023, starting at 6 p.m. at the Cowan Center for the Arts. ALMA LUCILLE HUNNICUTT
HUNNICUTT, Alma Lucille “Lucy” Boren, of Decherd, passed on Saturday, May 6, 2023. She was 100 years and 9 months. She was born on Aug. 23, 1922, in the Capitol Hill Community. Lucille graduated from Franklin County High School in 1941. She worked at the Farmer’s Home Administration, Patton’s Clothing Company and Camp Forrest. While at Camp Forrest, she met her husband, Edward Hunnicutt. They were married 66 days after their first date and were married for 70 years. Lucille served her community as a member of the Capital Hill Home Demonstration Club, Capital Hill Elementary School, the Franklin County Beautification Club, and was a fundraiser for the Capital Hill Community Center. Lucille was a devoted and faithful member of the Capital Hill and Winchester churches of Christ. In addition to her family, community, church, she loved to cook for her family and anyone else who would stop by the house at dinnertime! Her generosity and hospitality were her trademarks. Her meatloaf dinner, peach cobbler and homemade ice cream are famous among family and friends. She was a lifelong learner and avid reader of novels, nonfiction and most importantly, the Bible. She also loved to plant flower gardens and was very talented at arranging flowers. As she had more time, she especially loved watching all the sports of the Tennessee Vols and the Atlanta Braves. But most of all, Lucille loved holding hands and kissing her (who she called her boyfriend)… Edward! They were the picture of “true love.” Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Lee Hunnicutt, Sr.; her parents, Thomas Clay Boren and Thelma Starnes Boren; one brother, Chester; a son, George Thomas (Tommy) Hunnicutt; granddaughter, Sheri Stokes; and great-grandson, Todd A. Stokes, Jr. Lucille is survived by one son, Edward Lee Hunnicutt, Jr. (Linda); three daughters, Sandra (Mike) Roggli, Deborah (John) Gravlee and Sheila (Gary) Crump; and one sister-in-law, EllaFair Mathis. Mam-maw was loved by her 13 grandchildren: Steve Hunnicutt, Karen (Kent) Bowen, Michael (Julie) Roggli, Tim (Anna) Roggli, Leigh Ann (Todd) Cyphers, Chris (Shelia) Gravlee, Ashlee Gravlee, Lauren (John) McCray, Andrew (Zoe) Geisenhoffer, Cameron Hunnicutt, Ethan Hunnicutt, Stacey (Chad) Horner and Stuart Keele, and her 11 great-grandchildren: Jacob Hunnicutt, Marlena Stokes, Stuart and Abbigail Roggli, Garrett and Corbin Cyphers, Elizabeth and Emma Roggli, Serena Gravlee, Kal Bowden, Brook (Robby) Ragan and Braden Pickerel. The family would like to thank Lucy’s caretakers, Barbara Cable and Jane Farmer, for all the special and loving care they gave our Mom. They provided comfort, conversation and laughter. We would not have been able to get through the past 15 months without them. A special thanks to Amedisys Hospice for all the assistance and care for our Mom. The family received friends on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. A celebration of her life was held on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at 2 p.m. in the Moore-Cortner Funeral Home Chapel. Joseph Horton officiated the service. Interment was in Mt. Garner Cemetery, Decherd, Tennessee. Serving as pallbearers were her grandsons, Michael Roggli, Tim Roggli, Chris Gravlee, Andrew Geisenhoffer, Cameron Hunnicutt, Ethan Hunnicutt and Steve Hunnicutt. The Hunnicutt family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winchester Christian Academy in honor of Lucille Hunnicutt. CHARLES HIX
HIX, Charles Parker, age 91, died on Saturday, May 6, 2023. He was a wise, articulate man who was well respected among his community. He never hesitated to do what was right and was always willing and able to step into leadership. He was a lifetime member, teacher and deacon at Cowan First Baptist Church. He sat on the Franklin County Co-op Board of Directors for many years during his career as a farmer and he raised many Champion Shorthorn Cattle that were shown and sold across the United States. While his weeks were long and often messy, he could always be found in a clean suit on Sunday morning holding the hand of his wife, Mildred McCall Hix of Carthage. Charles was a rock to any and all who knew him well, a shining example of Christian compassion. But more than all these, and most importantly to him, he was an exceptional son, brother, cousin, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed. Charles is survived by a daughter, Vickie and her husband, Dean Simerly; son, Mike and his wife, Jill Hix; brother, Doug (Pat) Hix; and all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Charlie Simerly, Michael Hix, Jenny Hix, Haley Hix, Mason Hix, Leo Simerly, Miles Simerly and Noah Hix.
