Hornets fall at Cascade in pitchers’ duel

The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Cascade Champions 2-0 on the road Wednesday for their 13th loss of the season.
The teams were deadlocked for most of the night in a scoreless pitchers’ duel before the Champions broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth to give Huntland a loss.
The Hornets collected their only two hits of the day in the top of the first as singles by Eli Wiggs and Trace Morris and a walk drawn by Jed Ashley loaded the bases with only one out.
However, two straight strikeouts ended the frame and kept the Hornets off the board.
The Champions moved a runner into scoring position in each of the first three innings, but Huntland pitcher Daltyn Howell was able to get out of the jam each time without allowing a run.
The Champions scored their first run in the bottom of the sixth off of an error, and they added another run on a single with two outs later in the frame to put the Hornets in a two-run hole.
Ashley led off the top of the seventh by reaching base on an error to give the Hornets their first baserunner since the first inning, but he wouldn’t be able to move up any further as they lost by two.
Howell pitched a complete game for the Hornets with eight strikeouts, five hits and two unearned runs allowed.
With the loss, the Hornets moved to 7-13 on the season.
They will next play in the District 9A tournament. A schedule for the tournament had not been confirmed at the time of writing.
