Hornets fall to Eagleville, Cascade in home matchups

The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Cascade Champions 18-8 at home Thursday for their 12th loss of the season.
The Hornets held an early lead in the contest, but the Champions took control with a six-run fourth inning and pulled away from there to give the Hornets their fifth straight defeat.
The Hornets scored the first two runs of the day as Trace Morris hit a sacrifice fly and Jed Ashley recorded an RBI groundout to make it a 2-0 game in the bottom of the first.
The Champions scored two runs in the top of the second to tie the score, but a two-run single by Eli Wiggs in the bottom half of the frame put the Hornets back in front by a score of 4-2.
The scoreboard would be flipped in the top of the fourth as the Champions pushed six total runs to take an 8-4 lead, and they added two more runs in the fifth inning to put the score at 10-4.
The Hornets were able to chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the fifth as Caydon Bradford hit an RBI single and Matthew Dickson and Bradford scored off of an error on a ball hit by Daltyn Howell to make it a 10-7 game.
However, the Champions scored four runs each in the sixth and seventh innings to push the deficit up to double digits.
The Hornets scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh as Blaine Counts scored off of an error, and that would be it for their offense as they lost by 10.
With the loss, the Hornets moved to 6-12 on the season.
Eagleville 12, Hornets 4
The Hornets lost to the Eagleville Eagles 12-4 at home Tuesday for their 11th loss of the season.
The Hornets fell into a deep hole early in the contest and weren’t able to work out of it as they took a loss in the district matchup.
The Eagles scored the first run of the day in the top of the first off of an RBI single.
The Hornets were able to briefly take the lead in the bottom of the first as Evan Keller hit an RBI double and later came around to score off of an error on a ball hit by Dickson to give Huntland a 2-1 advantage.
However, the Eagles scored five runs in the top of the second and three runs in the third to put the Hornets behind by a score of 9-2.
The Eagles tacked on another three runs in the top of the fifth to create a double-digit deficit late.
The Hornets were able to avoid the mercy rule with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth as Wiggs scored off of an error and Morris hit into an RBI groundout to make it a 12-4 game.
The score remained there for the rest of the day as the Hornets lost by eight.
With the loss, the Hornets moved to 6-11 on the season and 3-5 in district play.
They will next play Tuesday at home against the Huntsville Falcons. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
