Lady Hornets falter in pitchers’ duel at Moore County

S

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Moore County Raiderettes 3-1 on the road Tuesday for their fourth loss of the season.

The district game was a pitchers’ duel throughout with the Lady Hornets falling behind in the fifth inning and not being able to muster enough offense for a comeback.

After having their first 12 batters of the game retired by Huntland pitcher Ashtyn Danley, the Raiderettes got their first baserunner off of an error to lead off the bottom of the fifth.

That runner would come around to score on Moore County’s first hit of the game a few batters later, and the Raiderettes added another RBI single later in the frame to put Huntland in a 2-0 hole.

The Lady Hornets answered back with their only run in the top of the sixth as Danley drew a one-out walk and stole second and third before DeAnna Burton hit an RBI single to bring her in to score. The single by Burton would also be the only hit of the day for the Lady Hornets.

However, the Raiderettes scored another run in the bottom of the sixth off of a passed ball with two outs to put the deficit back at two runs.

The Lady Hornets were retired in order in the top of the seventh as they lost by two.

Danley pitched a complete game for the Lady Hornets with 10 strikeouts, four hits and three unearned runs allowed.

With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 7-4 on the season and 2-1 in district play.

They will next play Thursday at South Pittsburg High School. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
