Lady Hornets trounce Blackman in road matchup

The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Blackman Lady Blaze 19-5 on the road Wednesday for their second win of the season.

The Lady Hornets jumped out to a big early lead and turned the game into a total blowout in the sixth inning as they wrapped up the victory a little early via the mercy rule.

The Lady Hornets got off to a fast start in the top of the first as Bailey Morris got hit by a pitch, Ashtyn Danley doubled and Hadley Gardner hit a three-run home run to give them a 3-0 lead before the first out was recorded.

The Lady Hornets added another three runs in the top of the first as Camerin Davis hit an RBI single and Hazel Reed and Blair Finchum both added RBI groundouts to make it a 6-0 game.

Gardner hit her second home run of the day in the top of the second after a Danley double as the two-run shot brought the early advantage up to 8-0.

The Lady Blaze made up a small amount of ground in the bottom of the second as they scored a run to get on the board.

The Lady Hornets tacked on another two runs in the top of the fourth with Reed hitting an RBI single and Davis scoring on a wild pitch to put the score at 10-1.

The Lady Blaze attempted to rally in the bottom of the fourth as they scored four runs to cut the deficit back down to five.

However, the Lady Hornets answered back with three more runs in the top of the fifth as Danley hit an RBI triple, Gardner collected an RBI on a sacrifice fly and Davis added an RBI double to make it a 13-5 game.

The Lady Hornets pushed the deficit up to double digits in the top of the sixth when Danley hit a two-run double, and the deficit continued to grow from there as Jocy May got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Davis hit an RBI groundout and Reed hit a two-run single for a total of six runs in the inning.

The Lady Blaze weren’t able to score in the bottom of the sixth as the Lady Hornets wrapped up the victory by 14.

DeAnna Burton pitched the first three innings for the Lady Hornets with four hits and one run allowed.

Kinah Mason closed out the final three innings in relief with three strikeouts, five hits and four runs allowed.

With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 2-0 on the season.

They will next play Thursday at home against Blackman High School. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
