Errors cost Hornets in narrow loss at Moore County

The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Moore County Raiders 2-1 on the road Tuesday for their fifth loss of the season.

The teams were even throughout the district contest with the deciding run being scored in the bottom of the fifth off of a Huntland error.

The first run of the day for either team came in the top of the third as Matthew Dickson hit a two-out double, moved to third on a wild pitch and raced home on a second wild pitch to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead.

However, the lead wouldn’t last long as the Raiders scratched a run across in the bottom half of the third to tie the score at 1-1.

The Raiders loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fourth off of an error, a walk and a hit batter, but Huntland pitcher Daltyn Howell recorded a strikeout to get out of the jam.

However, the Raiders would break the tie in the bottom of the fifth as an error with two outs allowed the go-ahead run to score from third.

Blaine Counts led off the top of the seventh with a single as the potential tying run and moved into scoring position after a sacrifice bunt by Jed Ashley, but Counts would ultimately be stranded at third base to end the game as the Hornets lost by one.

Howell started the game on the mound for the Hornets and pitched the first four innings with eight strikeouts, three hits and one unearned run allowed.

Kannon Lafevers came out of the bullpen and pitched two innings with two strikeouts, no hits and one unearned run allowed.

With the loss, the Hornets moved to 2-5 on the season and 0-2 in district play.

They will next play Friday against the Huntsville Falcons at Community Middle School in a game for the Viking Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
