Rebels rally for walk-off win versus Community

The Franklin County Rebels beat the Community Vikings 6-5 at home Wednesday for their second win of the season.

Both teams scored a majority of their runs in the last two innings as the Rebels rallied from a slight deficit in the bottom of the seventh to get a walk-off victory.

The Vikings were the first team on the board as they pushed a run across in the top of the second to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Rebels were held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Jacob Hardison scored on an error to tie the game at 1-1.

The Vikings loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter in the top of the sixth, and they would ultimately score three runs in the frame after a bases-loaded walk and a two-run single to put the Rebels behind again by a score of 4-1.

However, the Rebels capitalized on a few errors from the Vikings in the bottom half of the sixth with Austin Roberts scoring off of an error on a ball hit by Gus Gardner and Payton Miller and Gardner both crossing home plate due to an error on a ball hit by Casen Gilliam to make it a 4-4 game.

An error by the Rebels in the top of the seventh led to a Community run to give the Vikings a 5-4 advantage in the final frame.

Sam Vincent hit a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh to move into scoring position as the potential tying run. Following a walk drawn by Roberts, the Vikings committed an error on a ball hit by Miller which allowed Vincent to score and tie the game at 5-5 while Roberts advanced to third as the potential winning run.

The Vikings elected to walk Gardner to load the bases from there to set up a potential inning-ending double play.

Brayden Henley then stepped up to the plate and hit a groundball to the opposing shortstop with Roberts racing home safely to score the game-winning run on the fielder’s choice.

Vincent started the game on the mound for the Rebels and pitched four innings with five strikeouts, two hits and one run allowed.

Brayden Henley pitched the next 1 1-3 innings in relief with two strikeouts, no hits and three runs allowed.

Josiah Cullins came in to pitch the final 1 2-3 innings with two strikeouts, three hits and one unearned run allowed.

With the win, the Rebels improved to 2-0 on the season.

They will next play Friday against East Hamilton High School at McCallie School in a game for the Scenic City Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
