Estill Springs resident receives national university honor

Western Governors University has named Estill Springs resident David Statum as one of its distinguished graduates, an honor bestowed upon those whose work and volunteer efforts go above and beyond and make a significant impact in the community.

Statum earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing Education from the accredited online university in 2013 and 2014, respectively, before putting his degree toward starting a private counseling practice. He is a coordinator at the Coffee County Family Treatment Court where he serves as a nurse psychotherapist for court-appointed addiction-treatment programs.

Statum is also the executive director, founder and CEO of Family Food Ministry Inc., serving more than 2,500 people every week at 272 distribution locations in Tennessee and Kentucky.

“WGU Tennessee provided me with an exceptional education experience,” Statum said. “I was able to complete my master’s degree without financial burden from a brick-and-mortar university. My mentors were so great to share with me all the knowledge and resources that I needed to be successful in my career journey.”

WGU Southeast Regional Vice President Kimberly K. Estep extended her congratulations.

“David’s dedication to serving his community and helping those in need through his counseling services and Family Food Ministry Inc. demonstrates a great deal of hard work and selflessness,” she said.
