Hornets drop close district contest to Fayetteville

The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Fayetteville Tigers 63-58 at home Friday for their 12th loss of the season.
The Hornets kept the score relatively close throughout the district contest, but they weren’t able to complete a late rally in the closing moments of the loss.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead with the Hornets remaining a few possessions behind in the opening period.
They trailed 14-8 after one quarter.
The lead changed hands five times in the second quarter before the Tigers ended the half on a 9-3 run to re-establish their early advantage.
Huntland trailed 30-25 at halftime.
The deficit peaked at 10 points multiple times in the third quarter with the Hornets cutting the lead down to eight before the end of the period.
They trailed 49-41 going into the final period.
The Hornets pulled within three points of the lead on four different occasions in the fourth quarter, including twice in the last minute of play, but they weren’t able to find a tying score from there as they lost by five.
Braylen Phillips and Lashawn Kimmons led the Hornets with 15 points each for the game, followed by Eli Wiggs and Zeier Golden with 14 points each.
With the loss, the Hornets moved to 14-12 on the season and 5-2 in district play.
They will next play Tuesday at home against Eagleville High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
