The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Fayetteville Lady Tigers 50-42 in overtime at home Friday for their 11th loss of the season.

The teams were never separated by more than eight points as the Lady Hornets took a loss after an extra period in the back-and-forth district matchup.

The Lady Hornets opened the contest with a 13-5 run to pull ahead early, but the Lady Tigers scored the last six points of the first quarter to make it a one-possession game.

Huntland led 13-11 after one quarter.

Neither team was able to create much separation in the second quarter as the score was tied at 20-20 going into the halftime break.

A pair of 3-point plays from Jocy May in the third quarter helped pace the Lady Hornets to a slight lead going into the final period. May scored eight of Huntland’s 11 points in the third quarter.

They led 31-30 after three quarters.

The Lady Tigers took a 39-37 lead midway through the fourth quarter and attempted to run out the clock with a stalling offense.

However, the Lady Hornets got the ball back on a defensive rebound by May, and Ashtyn Danley hit a fast-break layup on the other end of the court to tie the score with about 1:11 remaining in regulation.

Following a turnover by the Lady Tigers, Danley drew a foul and hit two free throws to give Huntland a 41-39 lead with 49.7 seconds to go, but the Lady Tigers answered back by hitting a tying layup with about nine seconds left to send the game into overtime tied at 41-41.

A free throw by Logan McLennan gave the Lady Hornets their only point in the extra period as the Lady Tigers pulled away to beat them by eight.

May led the Lady Hornets with 14 points for the game, followed by McLennan and Yareli Avalos with 10 points each.

Danley scored five points and Morgan Sanders scored three.

With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 18-11 on the season and 4-3 in district play.

They will next play Tuesday at home against Eagleville High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
