AARP Driving School

An AARP Driving School class will be held Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Franklin County Senior Center, 74 Clover Dr., Winchester. Cost is $20 for members of AARP and $25 for non-members. Come by the center to sign up or call 931-967-9853.

Jan. 15

MLK luncheon

Lynn Cothren, human rights activist and former special assistant to Coretta Scott King, will be the keynote speaker on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. for a luncheon at the Cowan Arts Center located at 301 Montgomery St. in Cowan. The event, hosted by the Franklin County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, is held to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

MLK program

A Martin Luther King Day program will be held Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Franklin County Senior Center, 74 Clover Dr., Winchester.   

Jan. 18

F.C. Republican Ladies

The ladies’ division of the Franklin County Republican Party will meet on Jan. 18 at 10:30 a.m. at SUNRISE (The Breakfast Place) in Decherd. Topics will include the upcoming chili supper and the party reorganization, which happens every two years. All interested ladies are invited.

Jan. 19

Big Brothers & Big Sisters meeting

One of the Franklin County Library’s new partners is Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Tennessee Valley. Anyone interested in becoming a mentor is urged to attend an information session on Jan. 19 from 5-7 p.m. at the library.

SCHRA meeting

South Central Human Resource Agency Head Start/Early Head Start Policy Council meets on Jan. 19 at 10:30 a.m. at the SCHRA central office in Fayetteville.

Jan. 21

Polar Plunge

Everyone is invited to the Polar Plunge on Jan. 21 at 10 a.m. at the boat ramp near Lakeview Marina inside Tims Ford State Park. Take an icy dip in the lake to support the park. Registration will include a Tims Ford beach towel. Register at friendsoftimsfordstatepark.com. Cost is $30.

Chili supper

The Franklin County Republican Party will hold its annual chili supper on Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. at the Red Roof Pavilion in Winchester City Park. The public is welcome to come and support the local Republican Party.

Jan. 27

Safety checkpoint

The Tennessee Highway Patrol will conduct a roadside-safety checkpoint on Jan. 27 at 9 a.m. at UT Farm Road and Spring Creek Road in Estill Springs.

Feb. 3

Hog Day

Everyone is welcome to join in for the 15th annual Hog Day giveaway on Feb. 3 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Davis, Kessler and Davis Attorney at Law office in Winchester. Enjoy free food and entertainment. Two hogs will be given away to the person who guesses the weight of the combined hogs.

STLS Wine and Spirit Tasting

The Southern Tennessee Ladies’ Society invites everyone to its 12th annual Wine and Spirit Tasting on Feb. 4 from 6-8 p.m. at the Franklin County Country Club. Sample wines and liquors accompanied by hors d’oeuvres at this self-directed sampling event. Tickets are $50 each in advance or two for $90. They are two for $100 at the door. Feb. 6

Tennessee Songwriters

Tennessee Tourism, the Bluebird Café and NSAI invite area songwriters to share their original work on stage with other writers on Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. at the Oldham Theatre in Winchester. Sound equipment will be provided, but if you play a musical instrument, you must provide it. The winner of this qualifying round will advance to the next round with the finals being held at the Bluebird Café in Nashville. Judges are music-industry professionals. All entries must be emailed to info@winchesterdowntown.com.

Feb. 11

Chocolate Walk

Everyone is invited to Downtown Winchester’s Chocolate Walk on Feb. 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Winchester Square featuring live music, artists, vendors, retail sales and free chocolate with the purchase of a ticket.

Feb. 14 & 16

Beginner Beekeeping School

Beginner Beekeeping School will be held Feb. 14 and Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Franklin County Extension Office, located at 330 Joyce Lane, Winchester. Cost is $20. Register by Jan. 30 by calling John Ferrell at 931-967-2741.
